Braden, Photos 21-40

Endosperm: This is an endosperm because it is a plant. An endosperm is the part of a seed that acts as a food storage for the developing plant embryo.

Ectotherm: This dragonfly is an ectotherm because it is an insect. Ectotherms are cold-blooded things, like insects (and a dragonfly is an insect).

Mycorrhizae: This mushroom is an example of mycorrhizae because it is a fungus that grows in association with the roots of a plant in a symbiotic relationship (so at the base of a tree).

Endotherm: My dog is an endotherm because it is a warm-blooded animal. Endotherms are warm-blooded things, like dogs.

Frond: This is a frond, because it is the leaf part of a fern.

Gymnosperm cone: This pinecone is a gymnosperm cone because it is a vascular plant that has seeds that are  enclosed in a cone.

Gibberellins: This is a photo of gibberellins because gibberellins are the hormones that make this plant grow.

Xylem: Xylem is one of the two types of transport tissue in vascular plants. This is a photo of xylem because it is a photo of a plant, which contains xylem.

Heterotroph: My brother (and all other humans) are heterotrophs. Heterotrophs are organisms that cannot synthesize their own food, and so rely on other complex organisms for nutrition.

Amniotic egg:  This chicken egg is an amniotic egg. Birds and reptiles give birth to amniotic eggs, which produce a yolk to nourish the developing organism

Bilateral Symmetry: This leaf is a photo of bilateral symmetry because involves two sides, and is when both sides are the same.

Gametophyte: This moss is a gametophyte because it produces gametes.

Modified leaf of a plant: This is a modified leaf of a plant because the leaves are used for purposes other than photosynthesis. These needles serve to reduce water loss and as protection against herbivores.

Fermentation: This is a photo of wine. The bottle of wine in this picture all had to go through the fermentation process in order to become wine.

Basidiomycete: This mushroom is a basidiomycete because it is fungi belonging to the phylum Basidomycota, having sexually produced spores on a basidium.

Mycelium: This is a photo of mycelium because fungi of mycelium, and this is a photo of a fungus.
Spore: Spores are the equivalent of the "seed" for a fungus. This fungus has spores.

Unicellular organism: Bacteria are the most common unicellular organism. This is a picture of a doorknob, which contains tons of bacteria.

Glycogen: This is a photo of glycogen. This is a bag of french fries. French fries have carbohydrates in them, which are converted into glucose when digested, which is further converted into glycogen when it needs to be stored.

Introduced Species: This is a photo of an introduced species because dogs are an example of an introduced species brought down throughout generations when man first started breeding dogs as pets.

Braden, Photos 1-20

Detritovore: This crab is a detritovore because detritovores are creatures that gain nutrients from decomposing things. Crabs eat pieces of dead fish (or other sea life) making it a detritovore.

Flower Ovary: This watermelon comes from a flower ovary. Fruits (like this watermelon) are ripened fruit ovaries

Gymnosperm leaf: The needles of a pine tree are considered a gymnosperm leaf because it comes from a gymnosperm tree (the pine tree). The pine tree is a gymnosperm tree because of unenclosed condition of their seeds.

Ethylene: This is a picture of ethylene because it's a picture of a ripe baby tomato. Ethylene is an organic compound in ripening fruits.

Animal with a segmented body: This ant is an animal with a segmented body because, well, its body is segmented in three parts. The ant is segmented into three parts: a head, a thorax and an abdomen.

Cuticle layer of a plant: This plant has a cuticle layer because a cuticle layer on a plant is what makes some plants look waxy. The cuticle layer is a non-cellular protective layer covering the outer cell layer of the green,  parts of plants.

Eukaryote: This tree is eukaryote because it is a multicellular organism whose cells contains a distinct membrane-bound nucleus.

ATP: This picture is of ATP because plants use sunlight in their chloroplasts to make sugars (glucose) and animals will consume the plants to absorb the sugars. Inside the animal, the sugars are used in the mitochondria to make ATP.

Epithelial tissue: Epithelial tissue is tissue that is made of many layers of tightly packed cells that form a protective layer (like skin).

C3, C4, CAM Plant: A C3 plant is a plant that uses carbon fixation in a different way than other plants. It is called this because of the 3-carbon molecule that is present in the first product of carbon fixation.

Lichen: This is lichen because it is an organism that is formed by the symbiotic association of a fungus and an alga and occurs as bushy growths on tree trunks

Rhizome: Ginger is a rhizome because it continuously grows horizontally, underground. It is stem that puts out lateral shoots and roots at many different intervals.

Tropism: This is a picture of my knee. It is related to tropism because tropisms are involutary reactions or reflexes caused by stimulus (like when a doctor knocks on a patients knee during a physical).

Pollinator: This is a bee. The bee will move from flower to flower feeding on the nectar the plants have to offer, and while the bee feeds, it picks up pollen, which it then spreads around, thus making it a pollinator.

Pollen: This is a flower. It gets pollinated by pollinators (like bees). When a bee comes to enjoy this flowers nectar, it will pick up this plants pollen.

Phloem: The Phloem is near the edges of the stem. Its primary function is to transport nutrients, especially glucose.

Connective Tissue: My hand contains connective tissue from the ligaments and tendons underneath the skin. These connective tissues allow the fingers to be moved on the hand. Connective tissue is the most abundant tissue in the human body.

Exoskeleton: This beetle is an example of exoskeleton because it has a shell. The exoskeleton is the hard outer structure (such as the shell of an insect) that provides protection to an organism.

Lipid used for energy storage: This Canola oil is an example of a lipid because its composed of triglycerides that allow animals (like humans) to produce fats that store energy.

Long Day Plant: Long day plants are plants that only flower when they are exposed to sunlight for long periods of time.  These clovers are long day plants because they require sunlight for long periods of time.

Summer Assignment Update

Hello!  Hope you are all enjoying your summer so far!   We have decided to adopt the new 9th edition Campbell Biology Textbook (AP Edition).   ISBN-10: 0321558235   This is a textbook that is commonly used in university biology courses throughout the United States.   If you are planning on majoring in biology you may consider purchasing a used book on amazon, however, they are 105$ used.   Science college textbooks are pricey!   You will be able to borrow a textbook this year - if you choose not get your own copy.  They run about $165 to replace if lost.

Everyone needs to purchase a study guide for the AP Biology exam.   Be sure to get one that has been matched for the new AP Biology curriculum for 2013.  I was looking on Amazon and saw only one new 2013 version that won't be out until September,  so it will be fine if you don't have the new study guide until this Fall.   This will be the first year that the new curriculum and test will be run.   The new course contains challenging content as usual and more inquiry and lab experience.   Due to the additional lab time, your prior knowledge of biology and chemistry will become even more important.

If you haven't read "Survival of the Sickest" by Dr. Sharon Moalem be sure to get a start on that.  I found it to be a very interesting read and finished it in only a couple of days.  The book really got me excited to be teaching AP Biology this year.  I saw some great examples of the biology collections posted on the blog.  Keep up the great work!  This summer is a great time to get a head start on learning and reviewing some vocabulary for next year.  Try to stretch yourself and use some of the vocabulary words you may not already be familiar with.

I took a vacation to Washington D.C. over the last two weeks and had a fantastic time, but now I will be around and checking both my email and blog on a regular basis.

CAM plant. CAM: Crassulacean acid metabolism, and this is when only at night carbon dioxide is taken up.

Flower Ovary: the green end of the pistil. The function being holding the ovules, waiting to be fertilized by pollen.

Frond, a leaf-like and non vascular plant.

Gibberellins, a growth regulating plant the advances cell and stem elongation.

Gymnosperm cone, the seeds are surrounded by the ovary wall. The seeds grow inside the cone, which makes it non visible.

Gymnospern leaf, the pine needles have recessed stomata and a thick cuticle which slows down water loss.

Lipid used for energy use a fatty or waxy liquid that is insoluble in water but soluble in non-polar organic solvents

Long-Day plant, needs to be exposed to sunlight much more than an average plant

Modified root of a plant. The carrot acts as a storage structure.

Modified stem of a plant, transfer water and nutrients to the leaves.

the cuticle layer of a plant is the waxy/waterproof coating on the leaf

Frond: a plant like a fern that has many divisions

gymnosperm leaf: example of this would be the pine tree needles

gymnosperm cone: this is an example of a male cone. a vascular plant having seeds that are not enclosed in an ovary;

a small example of lichen, it grows on trees along with fungus

Pollen: this isnt a good picture, but the pollen is located in the center of this flower and is used to pollinate other flowers

adaptations of animals: dogs have sharp teeth to eat meats, and dogs like mine have coats that repel water

my horse is a heterotroph because he cant make his own food to eat, he has to eat what is present

autotroph: this plant makes its own food

Epithelial tissue: the outer most layer of tissue-skin

Territorial behavior: my dog gets protective of our house and will get agressive twards anyone that goes near the door

Seed dispersal: one way seeds gets dispersed is through animals. my dogs love to do that by eatting apples

Bilateral symmetry: my dog has bilateral symmetry since both sides of her face are the same

Xylem is in the stem of the plan and carries water
