R-strategist-organisms that are able to colonizea habitat rapidly utilizing the food and other resources before other organisms are established. spiders have many offspring at a time.

lichen- a fungus that grows symbiotically with algae, resulting in a composite organism that chracteristically forms a crust like or branching growth on rocks or tree trunks.

littoral zone organism- the littoral zone is the part of a sea, lake or river that is closest to shore. therefore any organism living ion the littoral zone is a littoral zone organism. kelp is found very close to shore.

meristem-an undifferentiated tissue from which new cells formed, as at the tip of a stem or root.

parasitism- a form of symbiosis, in which one organsism (parasite) benefits at the expense of another organism. here ants gather food from a dead rat.

phloem- in vascular plants, phloem is the living tissue that carries organic nutrients, particularly sucrose.

pollen- a fine/course powder containing the microgametophytes of seed plants. pollen grains have hard coat that protects the sperm cells.

pollinator- a biotic agent that moves pollen from the male anther of a flower to the female stigma of a flower to accomplish fertilization.

k-strategist- a form of reproduction in which a mother produces a few large offspring which need constant care and attention over a long period of time. they have a better chance of survival. cats have a small number of kittens to care for.

population- all the organisms that both both belong to the same group or species and live in the same geographical area. many people enjoying a sounders game in downtown seattle.
